Social and ethical implications of ITS for law enforcement

In: Proceedings, Transportation Research Board, 74th annual meeting, 22-28 Jan 1995, Washington, D.C.

Authors: Patricia F. Waller

Certain refinements in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have made the new technology more feasible and acceptable than in previous years. But some elements of ITS, such as automated speed enforcement devices (ASEDs), have become the focus of public concern and debate. The author describes some of these systems and stresses the need for "massive publicity" and full public understanding and support if the full benefits of this technology are to be realized.
