A universally accepted fact is that traffic safety and safe driving depend greatly upon driver visual input, in other words, disruptions of the driver's road scanning process, or eyes-off-the-road time. While the driver can control the road scanning process to a point, the chapter discusses the following: the effect of the road environment; driver characteristics; vehicle characteristics; effect of in-vehicle devices.
