Capetown-based initiative wins Global Grand MobiPrize

The SMART initiative (Sustainable Mobility and Accessibility Research and Transformation) at the University of Michigan is proud to announce the winners of the 2015 MobiPrize. Honoring entrepreneurial ventures as well as city and state governments supporting entrepreneurs, the MobiPrize provides a platform to showcase the kind of disruptive innovation in new mobility that is driving investment throughout the global marketplace. 
The Global Grand Mobi award recognizes an innovative New Mobility business venture that exemplifies the greatest impact on improving quality of life and safety, and/or revitalizing the environment and economy of communities and regions, and/or supporting human rights through sustainable transportation. 
The 2015 Global Grand Mobi winner is Cape Town-based WhereIsMyTransport ( With a focus on cities in emerging economies it supports smart, integrated, and accessible transport by providing integrated multi-modal travel information. WIMT takes verified transport data, processes it, and makes it available to the public in a powerful yet easy-to-use format. This allows cities, transport operators, commuters, and anybody else to make informed transport choices. The MobiPrize jury felt that this initiative should be applauded for the significant efforts made in creating a solution addressing the needs of the emerging economies. 
“SMART and the Mobi jurors and advisors from around the world deeply value Ford Motor Company’s support for Grand MobiPrize and its role in crowd sourcing, honoring, and supporting innovative, cutting edge solutions like WIMT that are changing the world one New Mobility enterprise at a time,” said Sue Zielinski, managing director of SMART at the University of Michigan. 
As the winner of the Global Grand MobiPrize, WIMT won a $5,000 cash prize; travel to the award ceremony in India, co-organized by Institute for Competitiveness, India and U-M SMART; as well as mentorship and networking opportunities.
An honorary mention was also awarded to KAPPO - Cyclists Analytics for Smart Cities from Santiago, Chile ( Kappo provides an innovative end-to-end platform for engaging the cycling consumer and for providing cities with a tool that visually demonstrates the disconnect between planning and actual movement of cyclists. 
Global Grand MobiPrize winners will be recognized at a special award ceremony in India in early 2016.
